Technical Co-founder Replacement
Part search, part succession. The technical problem is rarely the hard part.
Start a confidential conversationWhy this search is hard
A departing technical co-founder takes more than a skill set with them. They take context that was never written down, relationships with the earliest engineers, and a set of decisions nobody remembers making explicitly.
These searches are also the most sensitive we run. The founder is often still in the business while the search is underway, the team may not know, and a leak can do real damage. Confidentiality here is not a courtesy, it is the brief.
What we assess
What we look for in this search.
Willingness to inherit
Someone whose instinct is to understand the existing system before rewriting it. The candidate who opens with a rebuild plan is usually the wrong one.
Standing with the founding team
The early engineers decide whether a successor works. We look for people who have earned trust from a team that did not choose them.
Emotional intelligence about succession
Handling a founder who is still present, still consulted, and still emotionally invested requires a specific kind of maturity.
Comfort with incomplete information
Much of the original reasoning will be undocumented. The successor has to make decisions anyway, without either freezing or bulldozing.
These searches are run entirely by the partners, under the strictest confidentiality of anything we do.
